Loving and Living My “New” Old Life!

By Gay Barefield Leave a Comment Jun 2

The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams

~Oprah Winfrey

I celebrated my birthday a few weeks ago, 57 years on this wonderful Mother Earth, and decided to follow the advice of Dr. Christiane Northrup on celebrating birthdays;

“You celebrate everything that you’ve accomplished or that you’re proud of in the past year so that you have really a celebration of your worth and your increased competence,” she says. “That’s a cool thing.”

So instead of just celebrating another year older (which is really boring) I celebrated and reviewed all of the good stuff that happened during that year which included a major breakthrough.

It all started with a major move of my business to a downtown location (new to me) and the addition of another therapist to share the space. My work as a massage therapist which was already busy got even busier. (a good thing)

Became a Desire Map Facilitator so I could share this work I love with others.

Farm life is always good and busy but for some reason a little busier. (or I’m slower…)

Personal life….okay this is where we get to the breakthrough.

Sometimes one small thing can create enough upheaval to cause you to question everything in your life and the reasons behind it. My small thing was a ongoing conversation with my adult children (start nodding your heads if you have adult kids) about communication, their lack, my overabundance. (keep nodding)

When I realized that my overabundance of communication was who I am and something that I could not change. This realization then caused the rest of “who am I and what do I want” to come tumbling down. I started picking apart every aspect of my life, piece by piece and you know what I discovered…….

That I was piling on so much stuff, trying to do it all I wasn’t truly enjoying my life.

BIG SURPRISE!

I was working so hard to do so many things, that the things I loved to do were suffering and I wasn’t enjoying them as much. Once I stripped away everything in my life and laid it all out, here’s what I saw.

I had already accomplished everything I ever wanted in my life. I started and have a successful business, I have a beautiful farm with the horses and animals I love and someone to share it with me.

So why was I working on so many projects that were taking my precious time away from the things I love?

For me, I love learning new things, this blog for instance and lots of other things. But I had lost the ability of balancing the new things I was bringing in WITH my life instead of stacking everything on top.

So now, I’m living my NEW old life with a new sense of appreciation, savoring each moment and relaxing into the beauty of it.

I’m still learning and doing new things because this is who I am also but I’m more conscience of how it will impact the life I love.

How about you, are you stacking things on top of an already full life, never savoring the moments you have? If so, step back and see what’s really important and prioritize the things that mean the most.

Living and loving your “new” old life may be the awakening and change you need.

Dear Facebook, I Think We Need Some Time Apart.

By Gay Barefield Leave a Comment Apr 25

Dear Facebook,

I’m trying to be fair but you are not playing nice. So I think it’s time for a separation and possibly a divorce. This is no longer working for me.

I know how this goes, I’ve been through a divorce and it was ugly, painful and long. Separating from you, Facebook is turning into a long, ugly divorce too with all of the power lawyers on your side.

The children in this disagreement are two business pages which at this point I’m willing to split, Facebook you can keep one and I get the other. Again painful but it can work.

And on it goes, my personal struggle with a social media giant that is suppose to be at the very least, SOCIAL!

Not feeling the social love here Facebook.

What’s the reason behind this breakup you ask?

There were no haters (you know “haters going to hate” thing), no mean comments, no hijacks of my pages, just me being very tired of a long list of what I call, cattle calls;

“Look I’m at the gym”

“I just checked into Wal-Mart”

“Grab this coupon now”

“I don’t like or you shouldn’t like…….”

“Check out this cute puppy video” (btw I love cute puppy videos, but I digress)

And I could go on but you get the picture, you see all of this too in your newsfeed. And is it really news?

Now don’t get me wrong there were times that useful information came through those cattle calls but overall if it was something I really needed to know someone had already called, texted or emailed me.

But now I want out, delete, deactivate my personal page and keep my two business pages up and running.

“NO” said Facebook, “you can’t do that, we need to “know” who you are, where you are and what the hell you might be doing.”

Seriously???????

What you are really saying Facebook is you want to track my likes, dislikes, throw ads and other pages at me. Follow my friends and see what they are up to too. Put me in a demographic group so you can throw even more stuff my way.

And then there are the business gurus making me feel guilty if I don’t have a social media presence. “You could miss a lot of business exposure, your target audience or worse yet another “LIKE”, they proclaim.

For me, Facebook, you have really been a huge disappointment and now you want to punish me for wanting to leave you?

Well I may not win the whole battle and you may get custody of one or both pages but I will keep my sanity and have a whole helluva lot more time to do the things I want to do, like writing this blog post about you.

As the separation proceedings continue my dear community and if I leave Facebook then know that I’m still right here, sending you my thoughts through my writing on living a life you love. And unlike Facebook, when you get tired of my stuff you get to unsubscribe guilt free with no hoops to jump through.

And if you want to keep up with the Facebook drama, stay tuned to the Zen Chick page or follow Zen Chick on Twitter.

Why “Fearless” Is One Of My Core Desire Feelings.

By Gay Barefield Leave a Comment Feb 14

“Want to bring out the best in people? Ask them how they want to feel”

~Truthbomb/Danielle LaPorte

The word “fearless” can conjure images of bungee jumping, extreme biking or snow boarding off impossible mountains. Sounds scary and fun but that’s not where I’m going with this wonderful word.

Let me show you how I see the word fearless, fear+less=less fear.

As one of my core desire feelings (or CDFs), having less fear in my life means less worry. Worry for me is a revolving hamster wheel and I’m the hamster. I want to get off that damn wheel but my ever cycling thoughts keep me glued to it until FEAR shows up.

Fear then delivers his famous, hated monologue, “what if or you can’t or think of what will happen if you do that?”

This monologue is what will stop me in my tracks causing me to question everything that I know to be right and dead on. Then fear sits and waits, oh so patiently, for me to circle back around and question everything again.

Fear is a very tricky fellow indeed!

Fearless lives at the top of my CDFs. Asking myself everyday what I can do to feel fearless keeps me off the hamster wheel of thoughts and even if I get there I can quickly find my way back off.

Here are some of the ways I feel fearless every day:

  • I write it out every day, my worry or fear, putting it down on paper. My journal is The Desire Map Day Planner which helps me focus on gratitude, how to live out my CDFs in all areas of my life, what’s working and what’s not. At the end of every week I evaluate how it has stacked up based on how I want to feel.
  • Redirecting my thoughts is how I get back off the hamster wheel, a mantra of “I want to feel fearless” may sound simple but it works.
  • Pushing through the worry or fear by going ahead and doing whatever it is that is causing the issue. If I’m thinking too much about making a decision or phone call or whatever I’m blocking, just pushing through and doing it works every time.

Feeling fearless allows me to push that worry away, makes me really focus on why I’m feeling that fear. Then I can make a decision based on my intuition instead of the fear itself.

Fear does have a purpose from time to time but when it blocks things that you want to do or keeps you going down the rabbit hole of worry then fear+less comes into play.

Finding out how to feel fearless every day has helped me to break some old cycles and habits. It has opened up different ways of thinking and ways to be indifferent about things that don’t need my attention.

My core desire feelings are my guideposts, my trail markers to how I want to live my life based on how I want to feel every day.

What are my other core desire feelings you may wonder?

They are, light, soul joy, playful and freedom.

Ready to find your core desire feelings and change the way you feel in your life? Join me for The Desire Map Workshop (click here) and together we will discover how you want to feel in your life everyday.

To Truly “Live” Your Life, You Need Waders.

By Gay Barefield Leave a Comment Oct 4

“Jump into the middle of things, get your hands dirty, fall flat on your face,

and then reach for the stars”~Ben Stein

You are sitting in front of your computer logged into Facebook looking at your friends’ updates.

“Oh look, this one is going on this great trip, this one has the perfect home life (hubby with 2 kids) and this one owns her own business and works at home in her PJs.”

*Sigh*

“And another friend is in a perfect relationship where they don’t ever have a disagreement.” Seriously?

It looks like everyone except you is truly living their perfect lives where things are always rainbows and unicorns. (*sigh*)

WAKE UP!!

Life and that’s a life that is truly lived, involves getting dirty and sometimes it’s hip deep dirt, the sort of muck that requires waders.

Getting dirty means you will know true happiness by experiencing true sadness and true forgiveness by experiencing over the top anger. You will know the highest of the highs and the darkest lows. You will know true peace by facing total upheaval. Pure joy in the smallest things and quiet calm in the sound of your breath.

You have to be willing to get down, get dirty and deal with what life offers to truly LIVE your life.

We crave the calm, the easy, the flow of life that is drifting along. We set sail and revel in that control of our destiny, enjoying a few rapids along the way. But when we come upon some “dangerous waters ahead” signs, we start looking at everyone else’s lives and only see what we want to see which is peaceful and perfect.

When you see that perfect life lived out by someone close to you, what you don’t see is the struggle it may take to keep that “perfect show” going. In other words, what is going on behind the scenes may be so intense that even the Great Oz couldn’t keep it going.

Life is suppose to be dirty, messy, sad, intense and all of the things that you wish sometimes you didn’t have to deal with but you do. And to truly live it, to get the very best out of it, you have to stick your hand in Pandora’s box and grabble with some snakes.

Digging a little deeper to find and live the true meaning of your life is so much better than skimming the surface and living it superficially.

Life is suppose to be dirty, so buy yourself a nice pair of waders and quit spending your time looking at everyone’s lives on Facebook. Pull on those waders, dig your heels in the muck and reach for the stars!

“Who” Are You Still Dragging Around Every Day?

By Gay Barefield Leave a Comment Jun 14 0

“People have to forgive. We don’t have to like them, we don’t have to be friends with them, we don’t have to send them hearts in text messages, but we have to forgive them, to overlook, to forget. Because if we don’t we are tying rocks to our feet, too much for our wings to carry!”
~C. JoyBell C.

Okay quick question, who comes to your mind first thing in the morning? Is it your spouse, partner or child?

Or could it be that person(s) that you are still angry with or the one that is upset with you? Or is it someone or something from your childhood that you just can’t let go of?

All of these are important questions when it comes to your health, simplifying your life and your emotional well-being.

We all have “those people” in our heads that we keep having conversations with or replaying the event that we felt was unfair. But when you keep replaying the drama and conversations it’s like watching the fuel gauge on your car moving steadily toward empty.

In the morning you start out on a full tank of energy and when the mind drama starts you feel your fuel gauge drop more and more until by lunchtime you feel like you have no energy left to give.

Recognize any of this? Someone or something is draining all of the energy right out of you every day and you don’t know how to stop it. Or do you?

I have fallen victim to this little tragedy time and time again. But this week I decided to flip the switch on a thought pattern that was dragging me down and take that big leap. That’s right, it’s the “F” word, that word that gets thrown around a lot and treated like a “red headed step child.” (remember I’m from the South, we say these things.) Ready?

FORGIVENESS.

I know you have heard this so much it makes you want to puke and I don’t blame you. I felt the same way but this week when I said it out loud (in my head) to the person in question and knew that I forgave them not for what they did (that still bites) but released them from my mind, heart and soul, it felt freeing.

Not only did I feel more free from this one little (okay really big) thing but my energy level shot up, my mood lifted and my mind was much clearer.

“Hey this “F” word is a pretty good drug!”

Did I mention that forgiveness also lowers your cortisol levels ? Less stress = less cortisol. And keeping your adrenals and cortisol levels balanced is one of the keys to your overall good health.

Great now you feel better from the inside out which is very awesome but the work does have to continue especially if you have been dragging this person/situation around for a long time.

So try this:

  • When the situation/person comes to mind, just repeat your forgiveness statement and move on.
  • Remember, you are not forgiving the wrong that you felt was done to you but you are allowing this person/situation to move on from your life.
  • It is not necessary to say it to them nor do you ever have to allow this person in your life again.

This is all for you and only you and it is a sweet release!

So are you ready to use the “F” word a little more to reduce your stress, simplify your thoughts and improve your health?

I hope you will and would love to hear from you in the comment section if you think you can add a little more forgiveness in your life.

Share the love of this post with someone else in your life who might need to open up and add a little forgiveness to their lives too.

What Will They Think?

By Gay Barefield Leave a Comment May 17 2

You have decided to:

  • carve out time for yourself
  • eat healthier and exercise more
  • quit your job
  • write a book
  • start your own business and the list goes on….

Your friends and family think your new changes are a great idea so you are met with a resounding “Good for you!” cheer.

Until you actually start to make those changes………

Then the sabotage and questions start with a relentless force.“Why do you want to do this?” “Have you lost your mind, this is not a good idea?” or “Isn’t that a little selfish of you?”

“What the hell?” you think, “what happened to all of the cheerleaders that thought this was a wonderful idea?” “Why can’t they just be happy for me?”

This can be the point in your pursuit where your journey toward success can come to a screeching halt all because of what other people think.

But wait, it doesn’t have to be this way!

It’s hard when you feel like all of the people around you are not as happy about your changes and you begin to feel that maybe you have decided to do the wrong thing or that it was a bad idea.

Change regardless of how positive it is in our minds is viewed as a death of sorts.

Stay the same = good for them.

Make a change = viewed as a death of the familiar and comfortable.

When you look at your changes from other peoples’ perspective, you see why they are trying to get you to stop doing something different. It may scare you but it really scares the hell out of them.

Here’s why; you will move forward in your life and they fear that you will leave them behind. Or you will be doing exactly what they wish they could do but their fear of failure is greater than yours.

Either way to your friends and family, staying the same is safe and it keeps you in their “tribe.” But ask yourself truthfully, do you want to stay the same?

Whether your change is a small one like taking more time for yourself or something really big like starting your own business, you will always be faced with the naysayers and those naysayers are going to be some of the people closest to you.

When I announced to my family that I was going to quit my comfortable corporate job and start my own massage business with two kids still at home and a husband who had started his own business 2 months earlier, I got the “Have you lost your mind?” reply.

Did that stop me? No way, it made me more determined to pursue my dream and not look back. I had to believe in myself, my abilities and I found a different support system, the “tribe” that would cheer me on.

That doesn’t mean that you turn your back on your family or your friends but what it does mean is you will start to attract different people into your life, people who can see what you are trying to do because they are making similar changes in their lives.

These people are your new “tribe”, both of you recognize that common drive and share a similar spirit. These are the people that you draw strength from and who keep you going when you feel that you have nothing left to give.

So really does it matter what the others think? Yes it will matter a little but in the bliss of your success what they think will truly become “none of your business.“

Whether they come back to being your cheerleader or not (most will), you my friend were brave enough and strong enough to make some wonderful changes in your life! Good for you!!

I would love to hear from you about a situation in your life where you were faced with the naysayers and how you handled it.

And as always, share the love of this post with someone in your life who may feel no one will support them when they make some changes. Let them know you’ve got their back.

Why Success Scares The Hell Out Of You

By Gay Barefield Leave a Comment Apr 19 0

“When you take risks you learn that there will be times when you succeed and there will be times when you fail, and both are equally important.” ~Ellen DeGeneres

Close your eyes and breathe in deeply. Now I want you to think about how you see success, what it looks and feels like in your mind.

Does it come in the form of making a million dollars, running your own company, writing a number one best seller or traveling the world teaching the masses? Is it shiny and bright or does it make you feel powerful, on top of your game and ahead of the pack?

Now open your eyes and tell me truthfully, what you envisioned success to be, was it your vision or someone else’s?

It’s easy to find yourself caught in the trap of defining success through other people’s eyes or by society’s definition. We start a project or go after something that we always wanted to do using a standard of measurement based on other people’s data.

That is why success can be so freakin scary and what keeps us from trying something new. We don’t think we will ever “measure up” to someone else’s definition of success and when we don’t we see it as nothing more than a failure.

“I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.”~Bill Cosby

“Failures are successes in a different package.”

Click to Tweet!

Again we have a tendency to view failures by someone else’s standards instead of seeing the fact that we went after that project and it didn’t work the way we thought but we still succeed in going for it. Or you started the new business but you are not making the money you “thought” you would at first. Still considered a success.

Measuring success by what feels right and what satisfies you on a soul level takes the scary out of success. Not setting yourself up for the failure because of “what ifs” and “what will they think” allows you to go after what you want on your own timeline.

For example, I’ll use this blog as proof. I started this blog over two years ago because I wanted to share the things I have learned along my journey and the things I share with my clients. Now according to the “blogging world” standards, I should have thousands of subscribers, instead of my small wonderful community, be making lots of money and if I’m not then my blog is nothing more than a “hobby.”

For me, it’s not a hobby because I get to connect with all of you and get amazing feedback. Also I enjoy stretching my writing muscles more than is comfortable and maybe one day it will become more of a business model. Do I consider it a failure by MY standards? Absolutely not!

I enjoy bending and breaking those hard core rules, setting my own standards for success, knowing that what feels right for me is all that matters in the end. The one thing I truly do not enjoy thinking about is looking back and wondering what would have happened if I had just tried this……(fill in the blank)

How about you? Are you waiting to start something because that fear of failure or success is being defined by someone else? Stand up and step out, do it your way and don’t look back. Quit listening to the naysayers in your life and listen to your soul, that voice is sweeter and stronger the longer you listen.

I would love to hear from you, tell me what path in your life you want to start traveling (is it a new project, job, etc.) and how you are going to start listening to only you. Share your success stories in the comments and share the love of this post with someone in your life that might be scared of success.

Embracing The Small Victories In Your Everyday Life.

By Gay Barefield Leave a Comment Mar 8 0

We live in a world where instant gratification is the name of the game. Set a goal, make a big change, start a business and *POOF* it should happen! We follow the steps, put in the time and wait for the completion, getting frustrated when things go slowly or don’t appear to be happening at all.

You know what I mean, you get on the scales after a week or two of serious workouts and “WHAT?”, not one stinkin pound has found its way out the door. Or you decide to start a new business, doing your research on your market and putting in the extra work but things are moving at a snail’s pace.

Yep, I’ve been there and know the disappointment of not getting to your goal fast enough. But what if we started embracing the small victories in our everyday life along the way to our final goals? This was the question I was pondering and the answer came to me on my morning walk.

I had started adding a little jogging (read: little) to my daily fast paced walk when I realized as I slowly jogged up the hill that I wasn’t as winded as I had been before. Then that night in my yoga class as I sat in half lotus pose I noticed that my right hip wasn’t as tight as it had been. Huh? (picture here a V-8 moment, hand hits forehead)

This is when I understood that so often we get caught up in reaching the end, the goal, the big thing we were hoping to achieve, that we lose sight of our small victories that appear in our everyday lives.

When I take the time to truly acknowledge these small victories that happen each and every day it reinforces my desire to see the project through and stay on course. But more than that it makes my inner critic shut up a lot quicker and move along a lot faster, leaving me to bask in my progress toward my goal!

These small everyday victories are the stuff that life itself is made of and what keeps us reaching for the moon and stars.

Starting today, let’s all start looking for and celebrating the small everyday victories in our lives.

Click to Tweet!

Every day start noticing:

  • The step(s) that you achieved during the day that moved you closer to your goal, even if it’s just a thought process.
  • Pat yourself on the back more for these small victories instead of waiting for the final product to celebrate.
  • Re-evaluate your final goal every day to make sure that it is the truth for you. You may find that each day you start tweaking what your final goal really is and adjusting it accordingly.
  • Enjoy the journey!

Be gentle with yourself, trusting your process instead of trying to fit yours into someone else’s.

I hope that you will start embracing the small victories in your life and we would all love to cheer you on. Share those small victories in the comment section below and share this post with someone in your life that may need a reminder to start celebrating their small everyday victories.

Want To Suck The Life Out Of Your Life? Keep Saying This…..

By Gay Barefield Leave a Comment Jan 25 0

“When you make a choice, you change the future.” ~ Deepak Chopra

The words that will suck the life out of your life are some of the few words that will both anger and sadden me when I hear someone or even myself saying them. (which I try not to do!)

“I guess I have no choice.”

I was having an email conversation the other day when the other person felt like they were not getting what they wanted so the response was “Well I guess I have no choice.” Picture Eeyore here, head and ears drooped, telling Pooh that life is so depressing and there’s nothing he can do about it. Now in true Pooh wisdom, which is what I channeled, I said “You do have a choice” and I went about listing options, adding honey to my email voice.

Two different views, Eeyore (btw, I love Eeyore) playing the victim, handing over his power to Pooh and Pooh giving Eeyore his power back and adding honey. That’s making a choice.

Choosing not to make a choice is still a choice, it’s a choice that says, “I don’t care how my life goes so you decide” or it says, “I’m trying to get my way or make you bend to my rules so I’m pretending to hand you my power.” (read:choice)

“I discovered I always have choices and sometimes it’s only a choice of attitude.”~Judith M. Knowlton

Good, bad or indifferent, choices define our lives and when you don’t make them you miss out on living your life fully. Even bad choices are lessons we need to learn and when we turn away from them we never lean into the whole of that lesson.

But what about the big choices? The change your job, start a business, move to a new place, sell everything and travel kind of choices, what stops us from making those?

There’s lots of excuses, bills to pay, family to take care of, too close to retirement or any other reasons that society will pat you on the back and tell you “it’s okay.” Now you are off the hook, choice made for you and lots of people will agree with that choice because they have made it too.  (read:safety in numbers)

I believe that most of the time we see the big choices as an all or nothing option so we try to quickly hand them off. But at some point in your life will you look back and say “what if I had made a different choice?”

Here’s a different approach, what if you took those big choices, the ones that really tug at your heart and speak to you constantly and turned them into bite size choices. Smaller choices that get you to the bigger one in small steps. Wouldn’t that make the choice easier?

Any choice is a big deal for you and your life, even the ones that feel very benign.

You never know where a simple choice might lead you someday so step into your power, not away from it and choose your life, your attitude and how you want to feel. And when you feel the words “I guess I don’t have a choice” coming into your head, stop, breathe and choose. Making a choice will keep the life in your life!

Tell me how you feel about making choices and what choices you have made that really changed your life.

Be a Rule Breaker and See This Year Differently.

By Gay Barefield Leave a Comment Jan 11 0

“Following all the rules leaves a completed checklist.

Following your heart achieves a completed you.”
~ Ray Davis

Ready to change the way you think and live? Ready to trust your heart, soul and intuition to lead you on your journey this year?

Then let’s break some rules that have been holding you back and stifling your desire. ~nothing illegal, I promise 🙂

Ask anyone that knows me, I’m the person that will research a new project or idea until the cows come home. After a full year (2013) of doing that I realized the other day that I was really sick of listening to one more person telling me how to do “things right.”

Now I’m not saying that any of the advice was wrong, it wasn’t, in fact it was very helpful. Teachers and mentors can help you bring your own hidden wisdom to the surface and point it in the right direction. What was really wrong was the fact that I was caught in a vicious loop of never ending information. Knowing that helped me realize that I had to break out and break some rules.

“Sometimes we have to step out of our comfort zones. We have to break the rules. And we have to discover the sensuality of fear. We need to face it, challenge it, dance with it.” ~Kyra Davis

I had tamped down my ability to see my own way and to trust my gut. Knowing that I had created things before and I had the capability to do it again, it was time to take the road less traveled and define my own path.

Let me stop here and acknowledge all of my teachers and mentors (deep bow, hands to heart) who still give me insight and wisdom. No I won’t kick them to the curb, I just add my own intuition to all of their insights.

One of the things I learned this past year, that I will use as a mantra for this year is “Start before you are ready.” This is the perfect rule breaking mantra because it allows you the ability of not waiting until everything is perfect, the planets and stars are in alignment and Mercury is NOT in retrograde.

Taking what you have learned, what you know and adding your own twist so that the final product, the journey or whatever you are working on is true for you.

We all have a personal spin that is put on everything we do, whether it’s how you dress, talk, write, paint, teach or whatever and even though you may be doing the same thing everyone else is doing, your personality shines through and makes it uniquely you.

Which gets us back to rule breaking, trusting that you know what is best for you and your journey. Taking in all of the wisdom and information you need to make good decisions for yourself but in the end moving to the beat of your own unique drum.

In all of our hearts and souls, we are rebels on some level and trusting that rebel side will allow it to come out and help you make those bold decisions. But what if it takes you down a wrong path?

Even if you end up on a dead end street of bad ideas, you will still learn something worth the journey. The next time you will know what not to do and how you need to change things.

Isn’t that what a life well lived is all about?

I hope you will join me in making your 2014 the year of breaking rules and breaking out of your norm! I would love to hear your comments on what rules you plan on breaking this year.

Share the love of this post with a friend who also needs to break some rules in their life and together you can support each other on an incredible journey.
